Includes lots of chat about shares, fun, competitions, a chat with Claer Barratt from the FT, how to be a dragon to make money. Plus I am joined by AI robot Eli who wants to kill humans and take over the world.
Look forward to seeing some of you online on Monday, you should be getting a questionnaire in the next couple of days.
Handy for me if you fill it up, gives me a better idea of exactly what you want.
I would love to do more hotel seminars, they're great fun and nothing like chatting in the bar after and meeting people in real life.
But people seem to prefer online though I did do a hotel one in December.
I hadn't intended on another hotel until December but I have noticed a number of you who have emailed me this month saying you would prefer a hotel one.
And some of you have now booked so it is a green light for April 4th!
You'll get me all day long, live markets, a nice lunch, lots of snacks, Yorkshire tea and I'll buy you a drink in the bar after. And you get to meet some interesting people.
It'll be for near beginners and improvers, but maybe not if you an absolute total beginner who has not placed a trade at all yet.
If interested in a day with me in real life in the spring, mail me at robbiethetrader with "hotel interested" in the subject line.
I also noticed Elizabeth is seeing a lot more people face to face now for trading/investment coaching. Already three this week.
Perhaps this does mean people are starting to want to connect again.
If you'd like some investment coaching (maybe you have a sipp to run?) you can have sessions online with her or face to face at her office in Hammersmith.
Easy to get to, close to Hammersmith Tube station in West London.
I have seen her get very good results for many people so if you feel to need a boost and a chat about your trading do get in touch at elizabethburns2
Her website is - she is a fully accredited business coach.
Unlike me I never got a certificate in anything though I did win tennis doubles at the Hotel Lakitiri in Greece in 2001. If you want to see my certificate do let me know.
We are off for an adventure in Sri Lanka for a lot of February stopping in Dubai to see our son on the way there and on the way back.
After India last year this looked a good country to explore though we would like to maybe return to India for more there next year.
I gather it is a bit like India just less chaotic.
My main aim is to come back without picking up dengue fever!
It's a 6 hour flight to Dubai, check in with our son for a day then 4 hours to Sri Lanka.
Emirates business class, the only way to go, far superior to the pants that is now BA.
I can have a lovely comfy seat with these sorts of questions asked:
Fluffy towel for you, sir?" "Would you like your bed made up for you?"
Which wine would you like?" "Luxury box of chocolates?"
Also unlike BA the plane will take off on time and our bags won't go missing.
Our plan once we hit Sri Lanka?
In a nutshell we start in capital Columbo then it's Kotugoda followed by three days in the "cultural triangle" which includes seeing the Aukana statue which depicts Budda.
We'll be seeing tea plantations and drinking some plantation tea, (do they do toast as well?)
But we will take Yorkshire Gold teabags to be on the safe side.
In the slightly risky department we're taking a "sea plane" journey, Yikes.
It looks a bit on the scary side but saves a 5 hour car journey.
But hoping it won't be as rough as a Flybe flight I had many years ago.
On the way back 5 days to relax in Dubai with our kid.
Talking Budda, (which I was just recently, pay attention) I love the Budda quote
Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have."
I really do appreciate what I have. Very much indeed.
And I don't collect things or buy watches or jewellery, nothing in shops interests me at all.
All I really want is a luxury hotel and business class flights!
I'll tell you all about the trip when we get back, I am sure you just can't wait"¦
Forgot to mention I did a podcast with Zeus Capital and Nick Searle who is the most lovely chap.
He even posted a lovely handwritten thank you letter afterwards. Sheer class.
You can hear be blabbing on about how I came to be a trader and suchlike.

If you've had chronic pain for more than 6 months I have a great book recommendation.
Written by an amazing man who has posted helpful videos for no money every day for 5 years.
A big help to me. I got chronic pain after a hip op a while back, it was horrible.
Back pain, dizziness, nausea, you name it.
Private operators gave me crap addictive pills, I was given injections that were useless and various practitioners tried to "fix me".
Thanks to a mail I received I realised there was nothing really wrong with me and I was perfectly healthy for my age.
My brain, there to protect me, had simply left pain signals going, like a fire alarm that wasn't switched off.
I am now 95% recovered with no need for any medication or "fixing".
I suggest if you are suffering long-term pain read this book!
It could be anything like back, leg, shoulder, headaches - your brain is just sending the wrong signals. Obviously check first with a doc but if it's been going more than 6 months more likely to be a brain thing as everything has probably healed.
Here is the link
Happy to chat to any of you who want any further info on how I kicked chronic pain using methods that required no medical intervention, gimmicks or anything else!
Will be of course taking the credit card tracker with me to Sri Lanka.
Do get some credit card style tags they are wonderful and just over £20!

Put one in your passport wallet and one in your credit card wallet or purse.

Thanks for the comment on my show about songs you heard on TV.
Some of you have sent me some songs you liked and heard on TV so it looks like I can do a second one.
It's fun to see what unexpected music you heard and enjoyed.
Looks like from emails Remi Wolfe's "Hello Hello Hello" was a favourite along with the Gustav track.

Lots of people trying side hustles at the moment.
Actually it was side hustles that helped me quit work for good in 2001.
My best was and still is Telecom Plus which trades as Utilities Discount Warehouse.
You can sell energy, sim cards, mobiles, broadband and insurance wfh.
You get commission per customer plus an ongoing commission every time they use
a service for as long as they remain a customer.
No stock needed, all done online. If you're good with people and don't mind a lot of
no thanks" could work for you.
My young son is doing it and is roaring away with 20 customers already.
You're backed by a billion plus FTSE 250 company and it's rated well by Which Magazine for good deals and excellent customer service.
If you think this could be a good side hustle for you, mail me with "side hustle" at robbiethetrader and will send you some info.
Thanks for the feedback from recent events.
Gary:
The arrangements and agenda were first class, delivered with Elizabeth's charm and efficiency and Robbie's natural charisma. The drill down on all the stock trading ideas
really cemented the knowledge received from the beginners seminar and all
merited the further investigation Robbie and the group undertook.
Having a look at Level 2, DMA and Spreadbetting was very much appreciated.
The day flew by and finished far too soon. I'm convinced I am now a better stock picker and trader as a result of both days with Robbie."
Anne:
My husband and I had a lovely time. We learned so much, the hotel was great and the lunch fantastic. We didn't leave the bar till midnight!
Dave:
I've been a teacher for the last 30 years and I'm not sure I could have kept a group of pupils so captivated for so long. Humour and in-depth subject knowledge go a long way!
I loved seeing your thought process in deciding which shares to trade and level 2 was also an eye opener."
Phil:
The seminar was delivered with huge integrity (there was Zero hidden agenda/ulterior motives, it was simple and open with some great laughs thrown in)
As much as I found myself trying to complicate the process and make it more sophisticated in my own tiny brain.
You also took the time to answer "every" question anyone posed. And it was every question. Loads of shares ideas to boot, but more importantly the process to find your own. Brilliant!
Naked Rambling
Not the Heathrow runway thing again.
This has been rumbling on for years.
My view is no. Why?
Business travel has been reducing ever since covid.
And those travelling from the UK as tourists outnumber those coming here by 3 to 1.
Which means a new runway won't encourage growth at all, indeed the opposite as the 3 leaving the UK will spend the money in other countries.
(And selfishly I am right under the flight path in Fulham and Barnes!)
One thing I agree with Trump - get government officials back to the office!
There are way too many civil servants sitting at home.
We all know they don't really do as much work there, don't we.
Indeed I do know one and she happily admits to working in the ad breaks between This Morning and Loose Women!
I got into an older car the other day, and oh the joy.
No touchscreens! Just a few buttons.
One to switch on the heater, one to start up and one for the radio.
What the hell else do you need?
Modern cars are so irritating with touchscreens everywhere for no apparent purpose.
Try changing the temperature in one of these, it's hard work.
Even better no "warning" incessant bleeping. Ah, heaven.
I'd love to go back to my first car a Hillman Imp except it refused to work anytime it rained.
Man on The Inside ** Netflix
I like Ted Danson, loved his appearances on Curb.
In this comedy he plays an older guy who gets a place in a nursing home to spy and see who is stealing stuff.
Disappointing with the laughs centred on how dumb old people are.
Can't use a phone or tech etc. This gets a bit tedious. I love over 75s and most are easily tech savvy and funny.
Ted is wasted here, on seeing the script he should have turned it down.
Silo ***** Apple
Super finale for this superior sci fi with a lovely ending,
Severance **** Apple
This fantastic and unique show keeps up its quality for the new second series.
I reckon it's worth getting a month of Apple TV just for these two shows.
Dragons Den **** BBC1
Despite this format being over 20 years old somehow it remains a good watch.
The only glaring issue is pretty much everyone wants Peter to invest above the others.
Youngest dragon Stephen seems to have lost any appetite to invest in anything. And poor Sara just isn't wanted by entrepreneurs unless the others turn them down.
Guest dragons? Not such a good idea, they don't add much.
The dynamic between Touker who thinks Stephen is a young upstart and Stephen who thinks Touker is an out of date old fart is hilarious.
Black Doves **** Netflix
Thanks to Bernard for this recommendation.
Modern spy series with Keira Knightly and Ben Wishaw - a pulpy slightly silly but entertaining show.
It's pointless worrying about the endless plot holes and the fact our heroes never seem to get shot by 100s of extras.
There's loads of guns, killings, conspiracy theories and some smart dialogue.
Treat it as comedy rather than drama and you'll have fun.
Prime Target *** Apple
The handsome chap off One Day stars in this bonkers conspiracy thriller.
Leaving aside the nonsensical premise, it is interesting though not exactly gripping.
It's all to do with maths which isn't surprising as it's written by a maths teacher. Though for the moment plot points don't seem to add up.
Give it one more episode, it's on a yellow card.
Joe Biden pardoned his whole family. Not quite sure what they've all done.
I have also pardoned members of my family.
My mrs for never bringing the bins in and leaving me to put the milk bottle tops on properly.
And pardoning myself for not bringing in the bins for 3 weeks leaving the neighbours to do it.
Oh and the cats for always throwing up on the most expensive rug. Thanks for that.
NEW CLARKSON!
Jeremy Clarkson's very funny take on farming is just out and is already in the top 20 books.
The latest escapades from the Diddly Squat farm.
Lovely entertaining writing while also giving the lowdown on all the hardships faced by farmers.
The book is very good value around half off the recommended price at just £11 here:

EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.
****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets
Trump is back and the markets like it.
If you don't like him you may wonder why.
We know he's full of hot air and bluster and often his announcements are followed by inaction.
But - markets like it because there is a sense of energy and "go for it".
And his policies are business friendly, he encourages entrepreneurs and even if his rhetoric is bluster it does inspire that "let's go for it" confidence.
This compared to the gloomy UK authorities who do pretty much the opposite with more of a "well, everything's crap because of the last lot so don't expect much".
Under the radar bad news.
Torsten Bell has been promoted to parliamentary secretary for the works and pensions dept.
Why is this bad news?
This is the guy who fronted a far left think tank arguing Isas should have a max ceiling of just 100k.
And he also thinks the tax free sum allowed of £242,000 ish from a pension pot should be reduced to 40k.
Now he has some power. Uh oh.
Let's just hope others see the foolishness of his ideas but it is an under the counter warning that it is still possible our Isas and Pension funds could come under attack.
I was chatting to a friend who is very high up in a field of expertise and runs a massive business and she has high up contacts in politics and access to some of them.
She is extremely unimpressed with the calibre of those high up in the new govt.
Apparently Angela Rayner runs the show while Lord Sir Keir just delegates everything.
My friend has told them that current policy is quite simply going to drag business and the UK down.
This policy she told them has meant entrepreneurs and businesses have stopped taking risks.
These risks need to be taken for businesses to expand, instead many are now actively cutting back, so where will the growth come from?
She commented that after talking to some of them "they don't have the skills to govern."
She now has to plan to contract rather than expand. And things don't look good for later in the year when the tax rises kick in.
From planning to increase her quite large business now it won't happen.
Sorry about that! I wish I could pass on better news. As the crowds chant "You don't know what you're doing."
Went to an Everyman Cinema to see Nicole Kidman get her kit off at the weekend and it's a nice place. You get a sofa and "table service".
Which in effect means the smell of microwaved food..
Still, it was busy so I was interested to read its results this week.
When reading results here's a tip.
If the first thing in results is "adjusted ebita" don't touch the shares.
In effect it's all a pretence. You've got to head way down the report to discover it actually makes a loss, has a big debt and is uninvestable.
There must be a new rule: reporting companies must tell us its pre-tax profits followed by its net debt, and how much of the net debt is lease liabilities.
And right at the top of any statement.
Is this really too much to ask?
It doesn't matter how far down you hide the problems, we will find it and not buy the shares!
So Everyman Cinema? Just flag the loss at the top of your next statement.
Thanks mainly to Big Don (I suspect that's what he calls it) markets have been rather nice.
Shares have been going up!! I know it's a strange feeling.
Not sure how long that will go on for, but it's been good.
Given I'm away in Sri Lanka for a lot of February and maybe out of touch with wi fi for part of it I'm cautious about taking on many new positions.
But there are one or two which seem reasonably safe.
I got some Victorian Plumbing which doesn't sound that exciting but actually"¦
It's a rather decent online supply business and it's been using its cash on acquisitions, tidying up loose ends and a way bigger warehouse.
Its plan is to continue to expand and it looks like a nice isa tuckaway.
I bought on some weakness, the initial plan is a return to around the 120p level it got to recently.
I still hold a few shares which I got about 3 years ago at 40p.
Another one I bought is Optima Health Group.
This provides tech based corporate health and wellbeing solutions.
This company demerged from Marlowe to stand on its own late last year leaving it with a small net debt.
If forecast profits for next year and anywhere near right then it looks reasonable value for a potential long-term isa hold.
It just bought BHSF which looks like the start of a number of likely acquisitions to grow the business.
Looks like for now a reasonably safeish tuckaway and I'm looking for a nice slowly improving share price.
Another one looking to grow by acquisition is Globaldata which has an impressive firepower of £340m or so provided by its banks.
It's a leading tech data analytics platform.
It bought four companies in the last months of 2024 and we can expect a lot more to come according to various comments.
Forecasts for growth here look strong and if it can buy others the market likes we could see an announcement which should help lift the share price.
I'm initially looking for a return of the share price to 240p - it has a very firm bottom (stop it) at 170ish.
I topped up on LBG Media an under the radar share that attracts little interest apart from me.
It reported this week with an ahead of expectations statement with a confident sounding outlook for its expansion plans in the US.
I reckon sooner or later this one is going to get bought out by a US company.
If this was trading in the US it would probably be worth 50pc more.
So I will stick with this and I expect a very decent upside with some patience.
History often repeats itself with some shares.
As always YU group falls on a statement day. It always does, then it always falls for a few days, buyers come back in and eventually it goes back up to a high.
I suspect a lot of worried PI's are in it, innit? Thus causing crazy volatility.
Broker notes reckon shares are worth over 2000p which looks about right and there is a decent dividend as well with a ton of net cash.
Looks a super long-term hold, I bought most of mine in the 300-400s and sitting on a nice profit for the website of nearly £35,000.
In my higher risk sipp (see sub email for the higher risk coverage) I sold a few day before the statement and have bought them back this morning for hopefully a rise back up.
Broker notes are so helpful by the way, there was lots of info on YU.
You can get these at research tree. For a trial and a discount click here:

Generally the notes are on smaller cap companies rather than FTSE.
So much for a FTSE short, the Xmas rally did happen, just that it was a new year rally this time!
Given it was inevitable the Americans would be gung ho with its new President it seemed a reasonable bet the DOW would rise so I did add a dow long which is going very nicely.
I have now got a stop into breakeven so unless something awful happens on a Saturday it is now a question of how much profit.
Best Dow spread seems to be at TN after some shopping around.
Nice site that's easy to use too:
>
My short in Spirax was trailing stopped out for a nice profit of £7,200.
I suspect a repeat short is on the way when the market decides to sink ahead.
Decent report from Fonix today - good news there is a special dividend along with the usual one which shows confidence, goes ex dividend for this next Thursday.
For newbies that means if you buy the shares by the end of play next Wednesday you will get the special dividend.
It's a nicely growing business with new business in Portugal growing well , an Isa hold and keep.
My book on spreadbetting is worth getting if you want to get into SB.
This includes tons of worked examples, where to place stops and how to ensure you don't do your brains if it goes wrong.

I've now finished reading The Trading Game.
Boy, what a gripper!
Definitely makes me glad I never ended up on a trading floor.
The cast of real-life characters there is not a pretty one!
Full time traders seem to be either alcoholics, drug abusers, loners, weirdos, passive-aggressive alpha males, know it alls or just a bit barmy.
And they are all certain of their own brilliance...
Frankly just check any of the discussion forums, all these characters are there..
Anyway, super read and a must buy for anyone interested in trading!

SPREADBETTING
I discovered a SB firm that does just 0.6 on the FTSE and tight spreads on 100 and 250 shares, also handy right now if you are shorting given the such tight spread
Just a 0.6 spread for the FTSE which is fantastic and the best I've found.
Spreads on FTSE 100 and 250 stocks are really tight, I shop around SB sites when I am about to trade for the best spread and this one keeps coming out the best.

I've finished the book on AI - "The Coming Wave".
It's a must read for any investor - I've learned a lot, the writer co-founded Deepmind, one of the world's leading AI cos.
It's fascinating, some of the conclusions are scary and it's good to try and understand it, though in the end he concludes AI will being a lot of benefits. It will also drive some shares down and some up.

I love companies with decent cash piles and I've developed a screen for shares with cash with Sharepad to go with my new book.
The screen goes with one of my strategies from the new book "Dash for Cash".
The idea is it picks up sensible shares with a cash pile for further examination.
I don't mean it to be "just buy any share on the screen." My idea is it's a start for further research as just because a company has a cash pile doesn't necessarily mean it's a great company.
If you don't have Sharepad you can try a free trial using the link below, if you think it is useful after the trial you get a decent discount on the link and can pay monthly if you want.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes.
