Back from the long trip to Sri Lanka via Dubai there and back.

26 hours of flying overall. In and out of so many hotels. But all worth it.

Even though, having avoided dengue fever, typhoid and hepatitis, we managed to pick up a common and garden cold two days before travelling back.

Which meant we wasted the last 2 days in Dubai sneezing in bed.

Just about getting over the worst of it now. Oh, and my ears didn't pop on the final landing so it's been annoying.

I've had days of what feels like water stuck in my ear after a swim.

The dr recommended a machine that I have to blow up a balloon with my nose.

I think it's working! (Not THOSE kind of balloons).

The best thing about getting home after weeks of travelling in and out of hotels is..

Making my own Yorkshire Gold tea and toast. Hot tea and hot toast. At the same time.

This can't be achieved in Sri Lanka, well at the expensive hotels/lodges we went to anyhow.

(One of the places was similar to that in The White Lotus)

Plead all you like, the tea comes first. It gets cold.

Half an hour later the toast arrives (cold) and the tea is now cold.

Btw when I said tea we asked for boiling water for the Yorkshire Gold TV bags.

At one luxury place I waited so long for breakfast to arrive (I was the only one in the room) I gave up and stormed off.

Which was pointless as no-one really was aware I was storming off at all.

(One server probably said to the other "where's one of those twatty wealthy white guys gone?" The other replied: "F knows, the entitled bastard")

What's Sri Lanka like then? Is it worth the trip? Why am I answering these questions when frankly you're not interested and you'd never go there anyway?
Just scroll down to find out what shares I've been buying, oh hang on you're gone already.

Technicals first: We went to Sri Lanka via two stops in Dubai to see our son who is working out there.

Emirates flights to Dubai. Then Sri Lanka. Then the internal sea plane. Then back to Dubai then home.

Those Emirates flights. Stunning.

I actually ate some fish that was cooked better than some I'd had at the River Cafe. How do they do it on a plane and why are you still using Bloody Awful? (British Airways).

Incredible service. Car to the airport, straight to the incredible lounge, board straight from there onto the plane. Sensational.

There's even a bar where many passengers mingled. Well worth the money. If you can afford business, you can't take the money with you.

Sri Lanka is lush and green, a lovely landing there where we meet our driver and guide for 2 weeks, Douglas.

Douglas is a lovely man, probably around 60 who's never left Sri Lanka. Doesn't like the idea of flying at all.

But as we discover later on the trip, a shrewd businessman.

He seems to know everyone in Sri Lanka and has a keen eye for affiliate deals.

And to get a bigger tip from us at the end he comes up with a genius marketing trick which I will reveal later (no spoilers). It worked well.

We get to the hotel ITC Colombo (Capital of Sri Lanka) - security is tight, this is the hotel right next to the one hit by the awful terror attack.

No worries, we just visited a hotel close to a terror attack and then where a tsunami hit. Daredevils, that's us.

MIrror under car to check for bombs and a security check for us.

Greeting in Sri Lanka is "Ayubowan" meaning to live long or some such (I reply I may only have ten years left so let's hope so).

Tricky one to learn the Indian "Namaste" is easier to remember.

I tell them the London greeting.

All right mate?"

I knew I'd be battling mosquitoes in Sri Lanka. These bastards love me.

I always get bitten badly and I didn't want dengue fever. But I felt confident, armed with Deet repellant , room machines and the like.

Relaxed in the fantastic room for the first hour in Sri Lanka. Great view of Colombo.

The great reviews of the hotel looked justified even though it seems like they just bought 50 fake five star reviews. (Given all the reviews arrived at the same time using mostly the same words!)

About to get up to head for afternoon tea in the lounge, I looked down to see a dirty great mosquito diving into my sweet juicy twix tasting blood.

The bastard! The rule is you bite at dawn and dusk not 3pm! I swiped and missed
Yes, two massive bite marks appear during afternoon tea.

No worries for Elizabeth, she never gets bitten. Ever. It is so unfair.

Might be cos she prefers crisps to twixes. I reckon I probably already have dengue fever.

A look round the local shopping area. Shops seem three quarters empty.

I'm told with more valuable goods they don't keep too much stock in the shop in case of robberies, most stock is held round the corner in a lock up.

Colombo is a big bustling place, a bit like India but less chaotic. Usual Tuk Tuks and crazy driving. Hot, around 33c.

Not too much hassle from locals, mainly just the tuk tuk drivers.

Next day after a morning at the lovely infinity pool it's off for a short drive to our first stop which is wallawwa, an 18th century manor house.

Right in the country so lots of country noises. We were pointed towards "High tea" though this seemed to consist of just a cookie. Hid under the mosquito net around the bed and only got bitten twice.

At the hotel I thought I'd have a go at being friendly with fellow Brits.

They were slightly scary by the pool, very tall bankers and their wives.

I ventured "Not so bad once you're in" small talk as one guy got in.

Lucky he gave me something back. "I should have brought my goggles," he says.
Could have had a real swim then." He ambled off.

Excited, I'd made contact. I saw him lying by the pool the next morning and thought wouldn't it be nice to offer him my spare goggles.

Excuse me," I said kindly." "Please have these spare goggles, just leave them at reception sometime!"

He looked at me as if I was crazy but took the goggles.

You can have a nice swim now, no pressure mind!" I heard myself say,

As I walked back towards the hotel I suddenly realised. "That wasn't the same bloke."

I never got the goggles back.

I tried to strike up a conversation at the next hotel but made the mistake of trying to speak to someone under 25.

He looked terrified and I only said "Lovely temperature isn't it."

You could tell he felt vulnerable with no phone or wireless headphones to protect him from someone trying to communicate in the real world.

He then looked at me as if to say "Why is this old person talking to me?"

Doesn't he know you have to book conversations in advance?" I'm getting out of here, where are my phone and headphones..

I should have asked his number so I could text him.

Never mind, I stopped bothering after that.

A long drive to our next place around Anuradhapura where we visited some giant Buddhas and a massive population of cheeky monkeys doing things to each others' bums.

And settled into another hotel which was lovely and peaceful off the beaten track.

Visited some local villages the next day buying bits and pieces then it was safari time!

Pretty rough tracks, hurled around a lot but we did get to see some elephants up close.

Though frankly the elephants were looking at us thinking "Will you wankers please f off and leave us alone?"

Quite glad to get back, it was all quite gruelling though worth it to see the animals.

Next up, time to see what Unesco call "The eighth wonder of the world" - Sigiriya - an ancient rock fortress in the Central Province, in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle.

Sigiriya is a stunning ruins of a castle build atop a tall rock mountain. An engineering marvel, water was piped from the pools at the base of the rock mountain, all the way up to the castle.

The site dates back to the reign of King Kasrapa (477ad) who chose the site as his new capital. It's quite a climb to the top.

I was going to pretend I climbed it but actually I didn't but Elizabeth did and enjoyed the view.

As we travel around Sri Lanka our driver/guide Douglas gets calls from his wife throughout the day.

It's prison," he says whenever she calls. Douglas obviously cares for Mrs D but there is a bit of tension there.

He has the habit of suddenly stopping the car when he sees a bird.

That's a great tit," he says. Is he talking about me or the bird?

The stopping is disconcerting as his eyes aren't on the road. I feel it's a result if I actually get home in one piece.

He tells us there is a new government in Sri Lanka and the locals are hopeful.

The last lot were very corrupt but since they were booted out things are gradually improving, says Douglas.

Most Sri Lankans are doing ok or at least getting by.

Wages for a hotel worker are around £100 a month. But prices for food are very low.

Where are all the young backpackers? Gone, ages ago.

Douglas reckons it's the phones. They used to get loads of backpackers. Now just one or two. They'd rather sit at home watching videos of Sri Lanka on tik tak.

Highlight of the trip was a 45 minutes in a tiny "sea plane" (Cinnamon Airways).

This is instead of a 7 hour car journey with Douglas, so a relief, There are only so many giant tits I want to see.

The morning of the flight the Mrs panicked a bit and assumed we may not survive after I showed her a pic of the plane.

She wrote a quick new will, I had a look and had to complain.

So your best friends and your relatives get all the money and mine don't get a bean?" I politely enquire.

I didn't realise," she replies.

We leave from a Sri Lankan air force base. Very pretty actually.

The plane is tiny and we're on our own with the two pilots and another couple.

I didn't realise it would fly so high! It was a lot of fun being right there with the pilots who spent most of the time gossiping.

Saw a lot of the lovely green lush parts of the country,

All was fine on the flight till the landing. The plane began to roll a bit.

Being right there with the pilots it was a touch unnerving when alarm warning bleeps went off and the computer warned "pull up, pull up".

I've seen this sort of thing in Air Crash Investigation and it often doesn't end well.

And on that cliffhanger more from the trip in the next update! Bet you can't wait.

I realise it isn't a great cliffhanger as we obviously survived. Best I can do.

I did a podcast with Zeus Capital and Nick Searle who is the most lovely chap.

He even posted a lovely handwritten thank you letter afterwards. Sheer class.

You can hear be blabbing on about how I came to be a trader and suchlike.

Lots of people trying side hustles at the moment.

Actually it was side hustles that helped me quit work for good in 2001.

My best was and still is Telecom Plus which trades as Utilities Discount Warehouse.

You can sell energy, sim cards, mobiles, broadband and insurance wfh.

You get commission per customer plus an ongoing commission every time they use
a service for as long as they remain a customer.

No stock needed, all done online. If you're good with people and don't mind a lot of
no thanks" could work for you.

My young son is doing it and is roaring away with 20 customers already.

You're backed by a billion plus FTSE 250 company and it's rated well by Which Magazine for good deals and excellent customer service.

If you think this could be a good side hustle for you, mail me with "side hustle" at robbiethetrader and will send you some info.

Thanks for the feedback from recent events.

Gary:

The arrangements and agenda were first class, delivered with Elizabeth's charm and efficiency and Robbie's natural charisma. The drill down on all the stock trading ideas
really cemented the knowledge received from the beginners seminar and all
merited the further investigation Robbie and the group undertook.

Having a look at Level 2, DMA and Spreadbetting was very much appreciated.

The day flew by and finished far too soon. I'm convinced I am now a better stock picker and trader as a result of both days with Robbie."

Anne:
My husband and I had a lovely time. We learned so much, the hotel was great and the lunch fantastic. We didn't leave the bar till midnight!

Dave:

I've been a teacher for the last 30 years and I'm not sure I could have kept a group of pupils so captivated for so long. Humour and in-depth subject knowledge go a long way!

I loved seeing your thought process in deciding which shares to trade and level 2 was also an eye opener."

Phil:

The seminar was delivered with huge integrity (there was Zero hidden agenda/ulterior motives, it was simple and open with some great laughs thrown in)

As much as I found myself trying to complicate the process and make it more sophisticated in my own tiny brain.

You also took the time to answer "every" question anyone posed. And it was every question. Loads of shares ideas to boot, but more importantly the process to find your own. Brilliant!

Naked Rambling

While Dubai is a super airport Heathrow did it again!

No wait at all for the electronic gates, and yet again the bags were there.

I suspect a lot of the credit lies with Emirates, I suspect we'd have been waiting an hour or more for bags if it had been BA. (Bloody Awful).

Amazon has been handed James Bond. Executives said they were shaken but not stirred.

Let's face it, the last 2-3 films were pretty lacklustre and way too long.

I remember thinking "Is this ever going to end?"

Maybe if they can up the action and cut running times the series could be improved.

I suspect spin offs are coming, such as the story of Q.

On return from hols was laid up with a horrible bug nothing much for it but to catch up on TV.

There seems at last to be a bit of quality about.

Amandaland BBC 1 ****
Wow, an actual funny comedy from the BBC. Amanda from Motherland is set loose as the main character.

Her husband has dumped her, leaving her to live in Acton rather than Chiswick. Poor her, I was raised in Acton. Tough gig.

She tries hard to be "cool" and mix in with the locals.

Lots of laughs and sharp lines but can't help missing useless dad and Diane Morgan from Motherland. The Irish character is terribly stereotyped.

The White Lotus Sky ****
The third series is with us and it will never be able to match up to the sublime first.

But still nothing like watching uber wealthy having a bad time in a top resort.

Having been in one or two of those resorts recently I don't envy them.

Things are bubbling up nicely but so far the highlight is the bitchy threesome and their relationships.

Arnie Schwartzenegger's son is the big star, apparently his willie is to appear in episode 4.

Zero Hour **** Netflix
Brand new thriller with Robert De Niro, playing Robert De Niro of course.

He plays a former President back in the limelight, tasked with trying to find out how to stop a wave of cyber attacks.

Only seen the first episode and it's a great watch so far.

And a reminder to make sure you have a bundle of spare cash tucked away when the inevitable happens and you can't use electronic payments for real after a real attack.

Hacks Sky Max ****
Back once again into the comedy world of older comedienne

There's nice back and forth comedy between the generations.

Acid tongued humour at its best and there is always a laugh around the corner/.

Reacher **** Amazon
The return of the flawed crime fighter (ish).

This one is great if you're unwell. No time shifts, easy plot.

Baddies are all pointed out, and they repeat why they're being bad.
Any slightly hard plot points are pointed out for you in dialogue.

Look over there, yes that is the bad guy who wants to put a bomb in that building!"

Baddies and extras all get killed and the good wins through. Perfect!

Swimwear has been banned at Germany's nudist beaches.

Indeed officers will be telling you to get your speedos off immediately and the rule will be enforced.

I assume they will have to run some undercover operations.

I would have to tell them:

OK officer but now you'll find out why I can only wear Speedos XXXXL"

An airline passenger reportedly had to spend the flight sitting next to a corpse.

I'd take a corpse against a farting moving around human anyday!

My mum (sadly passed) who was a nurse once pronounced a passenger dead on a flight. Said passenger then luckily opened an eye.

NEW CLARKSON!

Jeremy Clarkson's very funny take on farming is just out and is already in the top 20 books.

Lovely entertaining writing while also giving the lowdown on all the hardships faced by farmers.

The book is very good value around half off the recommended price at just £11 here:

EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.

****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets

I'd planned on doing as little as possible while away in Sri Lanka, let stops do their job if need be.

After all, I want to enjoy a new country and not look at shares while away.

That worked well and had nothing to do, just kept a small eye on things.

And in any event not an awful lot happened with my holdings.

Markets have been quite volatile which isn't surprising with Trump in charge.

No-one has a clue what on earth he will say next (neither has he) and markets hate this sort of thing.

Here in the UK the new government hasn't put a foot right yet. Where "growth" is coming from? Only it knows.

However, the UK market looks incredible value and there are bargains galore around.

But then again a lot of UK shares are being shorted as for now the UK isn't seen as a place to invest.

Still Lord Sir Keir is seeing Trump today, who knows?

I suspect he'll get 15 mins then get brushed off with an underling.

I've picked up some speculative shares in Pinewood Technologies.

It has just raised more than £35m to buy Seez.

That's a leading AI and ML-powered automotive omni-channel SaaS platform. This enhances Pinewood's in-house capabilities, particularly in the development and deployment of AI chatbots for customer service and sales support, proprietary modules for vehicle appraisal and inventory management, and AI-powered digital marketing tools.

Shares aren't exactly cheap but given the outstanding prospects looks like a nice one to tuck away in the ISA.

Stop is some way away given it is likely to be volatile.

First stop is around 400p. It's been trading in the 300-400 range so looking for a nice breakout above 400p.

I bought some Gamma which was one we looked at at the hotel seminar in December.

It is a provider of technology-based communication services across Europe. The Company offers a range of unified communications, mobile, security and connectivity services.

It's just made a decent acquisition and has come down quite a way from its high, giving a buying opportunity.

It used its big net cash pile for the buy and has a mass of bank facilities on top to grow by acquisition as well as organically.

One big bonus is it's shortly to move to a main market listing from AIM which means it will get a place in the FTSE 250.

This will give it more liquidity and non aim funds will buy in for the first time.

For me this looks like a nice time to buy and the hope is sometime this year it will revisit its high of around 1700p which could give a nice upside.

I took aim and bought some Hollywood Bowl today.

A few reasons, one of the main ones is that it is at a much lower price than recently and it looks like a good time for a bidder to "strike".

Share price has come back quite a bit after fairly dull results but behind them there looks a lot of value for a bidder. Profits were down due to an impairment.

But it is building the business well with new locations in the UK and Canada.

It reckons it can mitigate the NI rise easily enough and claims a family can bowl for a reasonable £25.

It has nice net cash (though it does have lease liabilities). And a big value in net assets.

There's a ton of support for the share in the 260-265 ish area and with a giant share buyback programme started there's good reason to think the shares are near a bottom.

However if they are not I don't mess around as I don't want to buy a falling knife.

As in the book buying a share that's down a lot needs a Get Out Quick if it continues falling and much below 260p I'll be gone.

But it could be a nice tuckaway and one morning wake up to some good news.

Before leaving for the trip I had bought some Pets which was one that got a lot of votes at the seminar. I mentioned this to those of you who subscribe to the e-mail.

I don't like retailers much but it's the vet business where the value is.

Yesterday shares started to spike up and there was some bid chatter. If that dies off and shares retreat it could be a time for a top up.

I bought some Hikma on weakness.

Always hard to weigh up this kind of company but on the whole it seems good value.

A decent outlook statement was tempered a bit by a slightly higher debt.

The market initially marked these down as it always does on results day but shares are gaining strength and look worth a try and these lower levels

I averaged up in Optima which I bought in the last update.

Shares in Optima seem to keep climbing and there seems to be strong buyers in here, see last update for buy reasons.
I've shorted Trainline. (For newbies this means I spreadbet on this to go down.)

It's hard to see anything but downside here as tapping in/out extends to loads more stations and at some point there will be little reason to buy tickets except for the longest journeys.

There is not much upside to go for here. There is even new competition for tickets from the likes of Uber.

And there isn't a moat for the business either. I expect to click and collect profits here from my spreadbet accounts.

TN had the tightest spread on Trainline when I shopped around SB firms so used them for the bigger downbet. Link to TN here.

>

I noticed Lbg was the only share that hit a stop (part sale) while I was away and that banked a loss of £855 for the ones I averaged up. (Stop was too loose in retrospect).

Seems it drifted down on the CFO leaving. Assuming there is no dodgyness here a reassuring statement should see these head back towards highs so I bought a few back on the weakness.

Good's bid is set to go through, a question of either bagging a sale price of about 481 or waiting a couple of months for 490p. They get delisted early April but then there is only 2 weeks to wait for the full 490p with no selling costs.

I've bagged some of the profit and leaving some in - profits personally look to be over £100k, for the website it'll be around the £6k profit mark.

Nice statement from long-term hold Me Group this week, more than doubled and a half since I started buying these.

It's adding a new service to photos and laundry, Key Me, which is an interesting idea.

Great management, good use of cash and growth in its laundry services make this a lovely long-term hold for any idea with a lovely dividend too.

Defence has been going well, in particular BAE.

Cohort has also been recovering from a bit of a dip and looks like a lovely long-term hold. Not much going on from MSI but any new contract would see a massive rise from nowhere.

The short in Whitbread goes well.

Teenage Trading Gang latest:
I have asked about their tip to buy Dodgy Coin at 44 dollars a while back and it is now 20.
No problem apparently. Just buy more! You heard it here first.

Keep the faith in coin! (I don't mention I think coins are probably the biggest load of bollocks in investing history).

Also I should also buy "Solana" or something like that so of course bought that and averaged down on Dodgy Coin.

The lads also advised buying more Bit-Con at 88 dollars to average down on their previous tip to buy it at 106 dollars.

The teenage gang has suggested I am stupid not to make millions out of my buys and sells and tells me I should do Sub stacking (??)

People could pay me say £20 a month and access my dealings. They would type it all up and run the whole thing for a fiver per subscriber cost to me.

They tell me I could make £400,000 just from my email list! They are fine to take £100,000 of it for running the sub stacking. (Whatever that is).

They say sub stacking is a big thing and people are making a fortune from it.

All I have to do is tell them my buys and sells, with bits and pieces on them, hardly any effort on my part at all!

Yes but what if people lose, I ask, I would feel bad.

Don't be silly, they reply. It's just business. Just bag the cash! No time for sentiment. It's a dog eat dog world out there.

Oh and for a grand they will get me out there on Tik Tak!

Lots of small videos of me will sell loads of books and seminars, they say. And just 20% of any sales to them.

Old experienced fart takes the piss out of young idiotic traders" they reckon will sell well.

Hmmm, 400k? For no effort? Hmmm"¦.. Maybe a year and then retire?

I've told the gang I'll think about it.

Don't think too long old dude, time is money." Oh.

And you'll be dead soon so you might as well make as much as you can while you can."

Charming.

Bet I could beat them all in an arm wrestle. Hah.

Ian writes to say how much he enjoyed reading Little book of Bull Moves.

He says he realises some of what the book warns about is happening in the USA right now! I remember reading it a while back and thinking it was good.

People keep asking me which broker to use!

I use mainly Interactive Investor and Barclays and IG.

Interactive Investor is my favourite, I also have my SIPP with them.

Easy to use, and stop losses work well, plus cheap charges.

II has sent me a referral link if you want to try it for an ISA or SIPP.

If you add in more than 10k, you get a free year's subscription with them worth quite a few quid and I get £200 into my account.

Seems like a no brainer here is the link:

I've now finished reading The Trading Game.

Boy, what a gripper!

Definitely makes me glad I never ended up on a trading floor.

The cast of real-life characters there is not a pretty one!

Full time traders seem to be either alcoholics, drug abusers, loners, weirdos, passive-aggressive alpha males, know it alls or just a bit barmy.

And they are all certain of their own brilliance...

Frankly just check any of the discussion forums, all these characters are there..

Anyway, super read and a must buy for anyone interested in trading!

I've enjoyed reading "The Psychology of Money".

It's a best seller deservedly with 19 stories exploring how people think about money.

if you want to better with how you invest, trade or spend money it's a very worthwhile read!

SPREADBETTING
I discovered a SB firm that does just 0.6 on the FTSE and tight spreads on 100 and 250 shares, also handy right now if you are shorting given the such tight spread

Just a 0.6 spread for the FTSE which is fantastic and the best I've found.

Spreads on FTSE 100 and 250 stocks are really tight, I shop around SB sites when I am about to trade for the best spread and this one keeps coming out the best.

Here's the link if you want to sign up, on this link the lovely Lorenzo will help out if you run into trouble or make a fat finger trade.

I've finished the book on AI - "The Coming Wave".

It's a must read for any investor - I've learned a lot, the writer co-founded Deepmind, one of the world's leading AI cos.

It's fascinating, some of the conclusions are scary and it's good to try and understand it, though in the end he concludes AI will being a lot of benefits. It will also drive some shares down and some up.

Buy and read! Amazon link:

One or two of you asked about how we got our car back after it was stolen, we used apple airtags, hide them in your car or under your bike seat and get your car or bike back, amazing.

Amazon have them, link here:

The steering lock we were recommended and bought you can get from amazon, link here:
I love companies with decent cash piles and I've developed a screen for shares with cash with Sharepad to go with my new book.

The screen goes with one of my strategies from the new book "Dash for Cash".

The idea is it picks up sensible shares with a cash pile for further examination.

I don't mean it to be "just buy any share on the screen." My idea is it's a start for further research as just because a company has a cash pile doesn't necessarily mean it's a great company.

If you don't have Sharepad you can try a free trial using the link below, if you think it is useful after the trial you get a decent discount on the link and can pay monthly if you want.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
